Luke Styles world première — ‘No Friend But The Mountains: A Symphonic Song Cycle’
The work is inspired by Kurdish-Iranian journalist, writer and film-maker Behrouz Boochani's multi-award winning book, No Friend But The Mountains: Writing From Manus Prison, which chronicles his perilous journey as an asylum seeker and his forced detention on Manus Island.
Originally scheduled for November 2020 but delayed due to the pandemic, the performance will now take place in a COVID-safe setting at Melbourne's Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Sunday 21st March.
Aside from opera, this is Luke's longest and largest work to date, and is scored for bass-baritone soloist, choir and orchestra. The premiere will be given by Adrian Tamburini with the Melbourne Bach Choir and the Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Rick Prakhoff.
